Leavening Agents

It is a good idea to separate all leavened products out several weeks before the Feast and use them up, if you can, before the Feast so there is less to throw out (or give away). Below is a short list of leavening agents to check for and remove before the Days of Unleavened Bread commence:

  • Baker's ammonia
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Bicarbonate of ammonia
  • Cream of tartar
  • Disodium diphosphate
  • Hjorthornssalt
  • Hirschhornsalz
  • Lievito di vaniglia (Italian markets)
  • Monocalcium phosphate monohydrate
  • Pottasch (German markets)
  • Potassium bicarbonate
  • Sodium aluminum phosphate acidic
  • Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • Yeast

The following ingredients, although they sound like leavening agents, are flavor enhancers and would be all right to eat during the Feast:

  • Autolized yeast
  • Brewer's yeast
  • Calcium carbonate
  • Yeast extract
